Huntsville Collegium Musicum is our city’s only early music vocal ensemble. Comprised of nine singers, we rehearse and perform without a conductor, striving to strike a balance between independence and community. Our primary focus is on the music of the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods, yet we often venture forth into 20th and 21st century music. Our concerts consistently draw diverse audiences who are thrilled by our scholarly and passionate performances.
Our group held its first rehearsal in May of 2012 in the Randolph High School choir room with only six singers. Since then, we have grown to nine singers and rehearse in the sanctuary of Covenant Presbyterian Church. As an ensemble without a conductor, our rehearsals are comprised of independent singing, listening and critique. Performance practice is often discussed and agreed upon by majority or by our director, as we often bring to the discussion differing interpretive views. However, this process continues to serve us well as we move together through the rich and engaging world of early vocal music.
